Top Museums in Guadalest

Despite the small size of the village, there are several interesting museums that are located its old town offering the visitor countless experiences that will enrich their visit.

In general, the majority of the Museums are open approximately from 10am to 6pm (in Summer season, they are open until 8pm).

Orduna House Museum (Casa de Orduña)

Besides being ta museum Orduna House is the only entrance for:

  • San Jose Castle. The top of the massive rock that towers above the village with it's amazing views.
  • A Closest viewpoints to view, but not visit, the Acozaiba Castle (Castillo de la Alcozaiba) and the Bell Tower.

Orduna House was built in XVII XIX century and is located just inside the entrance to the fortified town of Guadalest. Originally belonging to the Orduna family who served the castle owners as castle guardians and governors to the estate. The house was purchased by local council and turned into a museum in 1994.

This museum is a must if you want to vist San Jose Castle located on the Highest peak of the massive rock outcrop.

The museum its self has some intersting furniture & features but the several rooms have limited number of attraction in them.

This was the home of the noble Orduña family they employed by D. Sancho Cardona, who was the Marquis of Guadalest. to be the governors of the Castle and, the defenders and governors of the Marquis's lands.

This small palace home, perfectly preserved, is today an authentic documentary centre with a library of more than 1,200 historical documents where, in addition, there are religious oil paintings and other works of art inherited from the glorious Orduña family's ancestors

Orduna House has 4 levels. Keep a lookout for the following as you go through the house

  • Art Gallery with religious paintings
  • Kitchen & dining room with interesting pottery collection
  • Aristocratic rooms, furniture & decoration
  • Library and document archive

The 15 metre long slopping tunnel carved through solid rock is the only way into the fortified town. Opposite the tunnel exit is Orduna House (Casa de Orduna).

Orduna House the municipal museum is the first building inside the old town entrance. Entrance to the castle located above is through the house and its grounds to the rear of the house.

There is also a beautiful several ton Bethlehem Nativity scenario made from stone, brick, bonsai trees, plants & iron that took 20 years to make.

Torture Museum

Torture Museum

Barbaric medieval to almost present times instruments of torture and execution gathered from Europe.

Its collection is made up of more than 70 ancient torture tools that were frequently used by the Holy Inquisition, both for its continuous torture and for execution by capital punishment.

Judas Cradle

The Judas Cradle was a sharp pointed pyramid shaped seat on to which the victim was lowered, causing agonising pain. To make it worse weight were attatched to the legs.

The device was often used in public to act as a umiliating punishment. and as a deteratent to the watchers to obey the rules of the authorities.

It could also be used as a very slow method  of execution.

The Ethnological Museum

The Ethnological Museum of the Valley of Guadalest shows how people lived, what tools and implements they used, the clothes they wore.

This interesting museum makes a spectacular representation that reflects what life was like in the Guadalest of the 18th century. Built on a rock, the Guadalest Ethnological Museum is located in the rooms of the old Arab fortress which is accessed through a tunnel.

In addition, it also has an attached house furnished and decorated with original contemporary objects. Its objective is to convey what the way of life of its people was like, which was largely dedicated to vines.  and the wine trade.

Located between Guadalest and Callosa d'en Sarrià, this museum exhibits different vehicles from the last century, between 1920 and 1970. Its collection consists of 130 motorcycles of 25 different brands and of all nationalities, as well as characteristic cars of the most classic Spain. On the other hand, the museum is decorated with objects and utensils also typical of the time. It's like a nostalgic trip to a not so distant past!

Museum of Salt and Pepper Shakers

Unique in Europe, it constitutes an entire artistic compilation made up of more than 20,000 salt and pepper shakers typical of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. All salt shakers stand out for their unbeatable creativity, as they exist in all possible shapes and characteristics: magnetic, speaking, animal-shaped... As for pepper shakers, their peculiar pepper mills are surprising, as some reach a metre in height.

Museum of Antonio Marco

Owned by Antonio Marco who is an artist.

The museum is a vista of model houses and churches, built with an infinity of natural materials and perfectly furnished and decorated. The museum also has a monumental nativity scene of around 12 tons.

Ethnological Museum

The Ethnological Museum is a real reproduction of a house of the XVIII century, displaying the cultures & every day living of that era in history.

Saturdays closed. Free entrance.
